eight of Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. :: English Literature
Compare the The Darkness Out There by Penelope Lively and chapter eight of Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. In your essay explore plot, characters, setting, themes, language and structure. in The texts I have studied, going to discuss and compare are 'The Darkness Out There' by Penelope Lively and 'Great Expectations' by Charles Dickens. These texts were written in different periods of time, therefore they have differences in their outlook on life. For e.g. Great Expectations was written in the pre-20th century and includes major variations about his way of life, however The Darkness Out There was written in the 1970's and contains a younger more up to date example of text. 'The Darkness Out There' is a story of two teenage children who help out the elderly; their names are Kerry (the boy) and Sandra (the girl). These two children are about to discover during their visit how looks and stereotypical behaviour can be deceiving, towards the end of this story Sandra starts to realize how blind she has been up to now in her life and feels a possible need for a change of character. Chapter Eight of 'Great Expectations' is part of a tale of Pip's journey in life, at this point in the story he is going to meet Mrs. Havisham. She is a wealthy old woman who helps and takes on children, turning them into fine gentlemen and ladies, this visit to the old woman turns out to have a deeper incentive than it might seem. Mrs. Havisham seems to have sinister motives and strange fantasies of how she wants to define Estella. Different characters and settings make this an entrancing story. k work info In both of the texts the children visit an elderly lady, in 'The Darkness Out There' Kerry and Sandra are helpers for the local old people neighborhood service. On this day they both go to help an old Mrs. Rutter with her chores, however they do not bargain on what they are about to hear. In 'Great Expectations' Pip is going on a visit to Mrs. Havisham's manor house, unlike the other text his visit is about his future and how he will be brought up. Even though the children are going to visit the old women, the characters in the story are all afraid of different things. In 'The Darkness Out There' Sandra is afraid of the woods known as Packer's End, she is scared of it because of the secrets and stories it contains for example in the text, it says that 'She wouldn't go in there for a thousand pounds' and 'You didn't know who was around in

Cultural Values and Personal Ethics Paper -- Morals Ethics Decision ma
Cultural Values and Personal Ethics Paper Personal, organizational, and cultural values are the basis of an individual's personal and professional decision-making style. These values are the key ingredients that make up our core beliefs. Values are ideas that are actions which could be right or wrong, good or bad that are the basis of human action (Tosi 2000). Personal values might also be called morality, since they reflect general expectations of any person in any society, acting in any capacity. These are the principles we try to instill in our children, and expect of one another without needing to articulate the expectation or formalize the process in any way. Family is the first school for a child where the seeds of cultural values are sown (Jain para 6). Cultural values are the beliefs of a human group that one can identify. Cultural value is the newest terminology which is used in literature on international relationships and economics. Individuals acting in an organization take on an additional burden of ethical res ponsibility. For example, organizations have codes of ethics that prescribe required behavior within the context of a professional practice such as medicine, law, accounting, or engineering. These written codes provide rules of conduct and standards of behavior based on the principles of Professional Ethics (Colero para15). Personal Values My personal values include hard work, honesty, achieving success in life, being flexible and helping others. My values evolve around leading a fulfilling lifestyle that allows me to be a supportive, loving and contributing member of my family and community. Humorous Wedding Speech - Some Advice for the Bridegroom (Groom)
Humorous Wedding Speech - Some Advice for the Bridegroom (Groom) Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen - If you didn't know already, my name is Alberto and I'm in the wedding party. That is the reason I?m dressed like this. What have I done to be blessed with such an honour? Who?s dropped out at the last minute? Had William?s other friends left the country? Could I turn the job down and still get an invite to eat and drink at William?s expense? I didn?t want to risk it, so lets get on with it. Sherry, you make a fine bride and looked absolutely stunning in the church this morning. William, you looked ? well ? a bit like me, but perhaps a touch thinner. But I think you'd all agree that it was a wonderful service. Mind you, those vows were interesting - William said, 'I do', to which Sherry said, 'You'd better'. Now, traditionally a wedding speech is not complete without a short anecdote, something that gives an insight into the bridegroom?s character. And I could stand here all evening telling you stories of ?boys nights out? or cricket club and rugby club tours. I could even recount the stag night (bachelor?s party), and that reminds me, William - you still owe me forty for those last two dances you had. But this is Sherry's day as well, and I don't want to ruin it with William's vulgarity. So I am going to stick to giving the bridegroom some advice. William, now that you are married, your level of d... ...uidance for the years ahead with William. So, - ?PLEASE SAY WHATEVER YOU HAVE TO SAY DURING THE AD BREAKS!? Which reminds me, William nearly didn't make it to the wedding today because of a minor operation. He was having the remote control removed from his hand. Well, that just about wraps things up - consider yourself advised! ? you?re on your own now William! As for me, I?ve known this man several years and I am extremely happy to see such a good friend get married to such a great girl. Ever since William and Sherry met, they have been inseparable. All that?s left is for you, ladies and gentlemen, to be upstanding and to raise your glasses in a toast to Sherry and William. To the bride and groom!

As sophocles observes in antigone Essay
4. Awareness (Greenleaf, 2002): Able servant-leaders are usually sharply awake and reasonably disturbed from integrated holistic perspectives, yet with inner serenity (Greenleaf, 2002). Habit 1 (of 7 or of 8), Being Proactive or the concept of Inside-Out, that any significant type of change in the would-be-leader must first come from within himself (Covey, 1900). 5. Persuasion (Greenleaf, 2002): Servant-leaders rely primarily on persuasion and on convincing even by way of group-building consensus, rather than through coercion or force based on the traditional authoritarian model (Greenleaf, 2002). While Gardner insists that: ââ¬Å"Leadership is the process of persuasion or example by which an individual (or leadership team) induces a group to pursue objectives held by the leader or shared by the leader and his or her followersâ⬠(Gardner, 1990). Yukl emphatically stressed, in that: ââ¬Å"influence is the essence of leadershipâ⬠(Yukl, 2001). 6. Conceptualization (Greenleaf, 2002): Servant-leaders perform a delicate balance between thinking out a problem and facing beyond day-to-day-focused-realities approach (Greenleaf, 2002). Habit 2 (of 7 or of 8), Beginning with the End in Mind, that the would-be-leader develops his own principled-center mission statement in life with long-term goals (Covey, 1900). 7. Foresight (Greenleaf, 2002): Intuitive servant-leaders understand the lessons from the past, the realities of the present, and the likely consequence of a decision for the future (Greenleaf, 2002). Characteristic 1, They Are Continually Learning, that the would-be-leaderââ¬â¢s perception is more than enough honed by his self-initiated desire to know it all (Covey, 1992) and similar to Characteristic 6, They See Life As An Adventure (Covey, 1992). Alfred North Whitehead strongly suggested, in that: ââ¬Å"Every leader, to be effective, must simultaneously adhere to the symbols of change and revision and the symbols of tradition and stabilityâ⬠(Warren Bennis, 1995). 8. Stewardship (Greenleaf, 2002): Servant-leaders merely act as stewards or ââ¬Å"hold men and resources in trustâ⬠for the good of all or for society, emphasizing openness and persuasion (Greenleaf, 2002), likewise very similar to Stewardship Delegation (Covey, 1900). Habit 3 (of 7 or of 8), Put First Things First, that the would-be-leaderââ¬â¢s effectiveness lies in making sure he balances his Production (P) with his building Production Capacity PC (Covey, 1900). Also, hence, according to Coveyââ¬â¢s classification, Stewardship is under Habit 3 (Covey, 1900). 9. Commitment to the Growth of People (Greenleaf, 2002): Servant-leaders are seriously responsible and deeply committed to the growth and nurturing of each individual worker within the institution (Greenleaf, 2002). Characteristic 2, They Are Service-Oriented, that the would-be-leader/ servant-leader regards his work as a vocation or a way of life and not as a career (Covey, 1992). Characteristic 4, They Believe In Other People, that the would-be-leader is very hopeful for the beneficial potential capacity of everyone around him (Covey, 1992) though not quite far is Habit 8, It is about Finding Your Voice and Helping Others to Find Theirs (Covey, 2006). 10. Building Community (Greenleaf, 2002): Servant-leaders selflessly give themselves for building true communities among themselves who work within given institutions (Greenleaf, 2002). Characteristic 3, They Radiate Positive Energy, that the would-be-leader despite the ââ¬Å"drudgeryâ⬠of strengthening his institution, you could still find him cheerful, pleasant, happy; his attitude optimistic, positive, upbeat; and his spirit enthusiastic, hopeful, believing. Therefore, with the above, Covey concluded, in that: ââ¬Å"A (good) habit can be defined as the intersection of knowledge, skill and desireâ⬠(Covey, 1900). Thus, with all of the above information, Sergeant Kiddââ¬â¢s dictum of soldiers learning to be good leaders from good leaders (Army, 1999) could now apply even to civilian employees or even ordinary civilians as more and more people are convinced through more and more pieces of literature pointing towards that thinning gray area between military and civilian leaderships. Political leadership is what John W. Gardner in his On Leadership, espoused in that: ââ¬Å"Men and women of the greatest integrity, character, and courage should turn to public life as a natural duty and a natural outlet for their talentsâ⬠(Gardner, 1990). While under business leadership falls all the works of Covey, Bennis, Goldsmith, and Yukl; however, noteworthy are those other works by Frances Hesselbein and Retired US Army General Eric Shinsekiââ¬â¢s BE*KNOW*DO, Leadership the Army Way (Frances Hesselbein, 2004) and Jason Santamaria, Vincent Martino, and Eric Clemonsââ¬â¢ The Marine Corps Way: Using Maneuver Warfare to Lead a Winning Organization (Jason A. Santamaria, 2003) because they believe that the business world could benefit from their shared experiences of the military. While the civilian sector regularly and easily pirates top executives from one private company to another or among themselves, the military sector cannot do that but because the military must so promote within its own ranks is why military leadership development is that paramount according to Hesselbein and Shinseki (Frances Hesselbein, 2004). Santamaria, Martino, and Climons first laid down the premise that although business and war are entirely worlds apart, the same principles apply to them because they both thrive in very competitive environments. The authors gave 23 true-to-life civilian examples followed by explanations before proceeding to compare and contrast 23 parallel true-to-life military examples (Jason A. Santamaria, 2003). Like the non-original ââ¬Å"Servant-Leaderâ⬠Greenleaf with his 6th century BCE Tao Te Ching, the non-original ââ¬Å"Maneuver Warfareâ⬠Santamaria has his more than 2,500 years ago genius and timelessness of Sun Tzuââ¬â¢s work The Art of War, especially in targeting critical vulnerabilities, surprise, focus, tempo (speed), and combined arms. The authors ask if they are really ââ¬Å"natural or universal laws of warfareâ⬠; however, because the concepts are intuitive to the greatest strategists, generals, and CEOs, the authors have endeavored to transform such intuition into a systematic problem-solving approach that ââ¬Å"the rest of usâ⬠can clearly grasp and then apply (Jason A. Santamaria, 2003). These authors interchangeably explained the 46 examples in detail the workings of the Marine Corps Way by compressing Maneuver Warfare through these not only 7, but 10 Guiding Principles which when implemented singly and shortly is very powerful, but all the more deadly when applied in subsets or as an integrated whole (Jason A. Santamaria, 2003). When these situationers are examined closely, potential businesses should achieve breakthrough results (Jason A. Santamaria, 2003). 1. Targeting Critical Vulnerabilities (Jason A.Santamaria, 2003): To attack and to swiftly take advantage of the competitorââ¬â¢s weaknesses after thoroughly studying both the allied leaderââ¬â¢s group and the competitorââ¬â¢s situation (Jason A. Santamaria, 2003). 2. Boldness (Jason A. Santamaria, 2003): When occasion arises to grab that opportunity to carry out calculated risks which can secure breakthrough results (Jason A. Santamaria, 2003). 3. Surprise (Jason A. Santamaria, 2003): Using surreptitiousness, vagueness, and sham to confuse the competitors. And for them to outrightly disregard their knowledge of the allied leaderââ¬â¢s group condition thereby prejudicing their capability to position well their assets against the allied leaderââ¬â¢s group (Jason A. Santamaria, 2003). 4. Focus (Jason A. Santamaria, 2003): Clustering together the allied leaderââ¬â¢s group materiel at decisive places and times to take advantage of important favorable conditions to meet the allied leaderââ¬â¢s group needs and objectives (Jason A. Santamaria, 2003). 5. Decentralized Decision Making (Jason A. Santamaria, 2003): Designating responsible people for them to make their own judicious decisions nearest the action centers after they have timely and thoroughly assessed firsthand local information about the situation within the mission target area (Jason A. Santamaria, 2003). 6. Tempo (Jason A. Santamaria, 2003): Recognizing prospective breaks, deciding, and executing plans more swiftly than opponents for the allied leaderââ¬â¢s group to grab the upper hand and relegate the enemy to always be on the defensive and always to be confused by the allied leaderââ¬â¢s group concerted and coordinated actions against the enemy (Jason A.Santamaria, 2003). 7. Combined Arms (Jason A. Santamaria, 2003): Timing the allied leaderââ¬â¢s group attack in such a way that his groupââ¬â¢s people, vehicles, equipment with pre-planned sequencing become orchestrated as only one entity; whereas, if the allied leaderââ¬â¢s group use them singly, the effect will not be as dramatic (Jason A. Santamaria, 2003). 8. Integration of Principles (Jason A. Santamaria, 2003): When measured individually, these concepts give the best results when implemented in subsets or all are treated collectively as only one whole (Jason A.Santamaria, 2003). 9. Reconnaissance Pull (Jason A. Santamaria, 2003): Reconnaissance pull is an illustration of implementing the concepts in subsets: the unintended reaction is an actual time happening to a golden chance to weaken or defeat the enemy, whereby when the possibility is afforded to the allied leader to surprise the enemy, that leader then familiarizes the greater organization towards the situation, with him assuming that leadership function in setting up and applying the attack. Reconnaissance pull covers four of maneuver warfareââ¬â¢s ten concepts: decentralized decision-making, targeting critical vulnerabilities, tempo, and focus (Jason A. Santamaria, 2003). 10. Full Integration (Jason A. Santamaria, 2003): Joining simultaneously all ten concepts together as one combined entity allows the person to effect the greatest outcome with much reduced cost of materiel (Jason A. Santamaria, 2003).

Cause and effects of Taliban Essay
The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan was part of a long term cause of the cause the of Taliban. The foreign influence that was exerted by the Soviet Union shaped the foreign and domestic policies in Afghanistan. The social and political impacts of communism and the Cold War put Afghanistanââ¬â¢s government in a very weak and unstable state. This made it easy for the allowing of the extremist group the Taliban to take over weaker groups and take power in 1994. Since the government was so unstable it caused the rise and fall of various political groups and leaders and a period of unrest and changes of power as well as war.à Afghanistan rejected Western influence after years of colonization under British rule and took political and financial aid from the USSR this close relationship between he countries led to the spread of communist ideas to Afghani leadership. Since Afghanistan suffered a severe famine that killed in estimate of 500,000 civilians the new communist platform progressed and offered hope to the Afghans. à Afghanistan being in such a horrible state and so desperate for hope the group most likely to fill the power void was the Taliban that controlled over 85% of the country. The internal factors contributed to the Taliban success because the Afghan people were just exhausted and had their own chronic state of corruption and insecurity. The Taliban became strong enough and took over the capital Kabul in1996 after locking down the country with their military strength. The Fall of the Taliban The Talibanââ¬â¢s involvement in the Sept. 11, 2001 terroist attacks on the US led to the US invasions into Afghanistan that displaced the Taliban government and forced them out of power. Effects Rise of the Taliban The Taliban then issued a radical reform to restore Afghanistanââ¬â¢s conservative culture. They enforced strict laws of Islam in daily life which included restrictions on alcohol, prayer, entertainment, and daily living. Televisions, alcohol, radio, dancing, and shaving beards were outlawed. The terrorist attack on September 11, 2001 on the Twin Towers in New York City effected the United States greatly. Taliban cruelly reduced women and girls to poverty, worsened their health, and deprived them of their right to an education, and many times to practice their religion. à Afghanistan under the Taliban had one of the worst human right records in the world.

Promotion and Price Analysis
The product chosen for its promotion campaign analysis is instant coffee Nescafe produced by Nestle. Before analyzing the promotion campaign, it is important to determine the target audience of Nescafe. In the major part coffee is usually preferred by both male and female at the age ofà 20 to 45 approximately. Children are usually not allowed to drink much coffee, since caffeine is believed to provoke special hyper reaction. Older people, in turn, are trying to avoid coffee because at this age they are taking special care for their health. Thus, the typical segmentation in the sector can be represented in the following way:Demographic characteristics:men and women from 20 to 45;single/married/married with children;elderly people who prefer decaffeinated coffee.Economic: low, middle and premium segments;Consumption habits:regular buyers, random buyers;those who prefer to drink coffee at coffee bars/ those who prefer to drink coffee at home / those who prefer take-outs;à those who prefer to drink coffee alone/ in a company;psychographical characteristics:people who lead active style of life/passive style of life;people who prefer status/price/taste/convenience;businessmen/students/working people. (Cateora, 1990, p.116)As for Nescafe its target segments are:1. Married and married with children people who prefer to drink coffee alone at home and buy instant coffee on a regular basis. It is caused by the fact that those people are oftentimes busy and they do not have time to brew their coffee. Moreover, those who have children usually face the problem that if they leave the coffee in the coffee machine, their children might tempt to drink it.2.Students who simply do not have coffee machines and prefer instantaneous coffee, which they can easily make at any given time. Thus, we can see that Nescafe is aimed for younger audience as its core segment.à à Targeting the younger audience as its core segment, it is very important for the company with such a strong b rand as Nescafe to distinguish the core values for this type of customers. Such values are individuality, independence, pleasure, self-confidence.Thus, the brand is positioned as the one, which has extraordinary taste that you want to enjoy every day. The slogan sounds like ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t let anyone prevent you from enjoying your favorite tasteâ⬠. The company emphasizes both functional qualities of the product, as well as special feelings that it gives to the customers ââ¬â pleasure, comfort, and the whole imaginary world that you want to enjoy over and over again. Nescafe is really aimed to be ââ¬Å"Your favorite taste,â⬠as another slogan states. Thus, we can see that Nescafe is professing more individualistic values. However, Nescafe is still perceived as a caring, charming brand, though it gives self-confidence and assures good taste. People choose this brand as they trust its long-standing reputation and think this brand is very reliable. Moreover, it is quit e affordable as well. Since it cares about people, Nescafe, as it was mentioned before, presents something for everybody ââ¬â a wide range of choice from different type of product to different sizes and prices.Having analyzed the positioning of Nescafe, it is easier to determine the key messages that are being delivered via different channels of communications. The first channel of communication is television with large-scale advertising. The key message that are being delivered is that Nescafe is a wonderful taste that needs to be enjoyed and enjoyed. Global commercial portraying woman in a peculiar garment trying to become unnoticed by her husband to be able to enjoy Nescafe alone is the best proof of that. Thus, we can see that brand managers of Nescafe are emphasizing physical qualities of the product, specifically its taste. However, the TV with its ability to show the wide range of colors, sounds and images is also chosen to make people feel and understand the sophisticatio n of Nescafeââ¬â¢s taste. It was already mentioned that Nescafe is positioned as a premium segment coffee (despite subbrand Nescafe classic). That is why it is crucial to transmit to the audience the very special qualities, the originality of the brand. Thus, on of the original feature of Nescafe appears to be its sophistication, its elite taste. The commercial is trying to convey that if you drink Nescafe, it means that you belong to the chosen circle of people who have exceptional taste, namely elite. The second channel of communication is Internet. In fact, Nescafe has its own web-site separate from the site of the producer Nestle. Nescafe site was created in order to give its target audience ampful information about the product and the brand in particular. It has the description of all the existing types of Nescafe (subbrands), about the new products that appears in the product line. It also tells about the coffee as a physical substance, about its nutrition etc. Thus, the main message that is being delivered via Internet (including Internet advertising) is that brand Nescafe is so diverse, that everyone can find something that suits him/her the best wether it is Necafe Colombie or Nescafe Gold. The message stimulates to try Nescafe and to match the desire with the available product brand. Finally, the third channel of communication is publicity. The latter is achieved by creating different kinds of informational grounds. It can be sponsorship of certain events that are covered by different types of media. It can be informational articles discussing the problem of coffee-drinking. It can also be different special events that are also covered in media. à For instance, in 2004 in England there was a contest the winners of which could experience a luxury balloon flight and stay in the country hotel house. The evnts was transmitted via TV. This was a great informational ground and thus the cause of publicity. The main message that is delivered via publicity is that Nescafe is a reliable trustworthy and responsible brand. Thus, drinking Nescafe one can be sure of its exceptional quality. In other words, publicity is aimed to ensure good reputation of Nescafe and ultimately to form a strong brand loyalty of customers. As for pricing, it is not dependent on the life cycle of the product. Coffee is a product with an extended life-cycle since the taste and the quality of it are unique, and the customers are usually loyal to the brand that can ensure the same quality taste over and over again. Therefore, the pricing of Nescafe is based upon its segmentation. Simply saying the premium segment brands such as Nescafe Gold, Nescafe cap Colombie, Nescafe Alta Rica cost more. They are aimed at elite target audience with more than average level of income.Similarly, there is also an offer for the lower income level people who cannot afford buying premium segment products.à This offer is called Nescafe Classic, which is substantially cheaper than bra nds mentioned before. Thus, we see that Nescafe pricing strategy is more of a marketing tool that allows to cover more of a target audience. Yet, the key target audience for Nescafe still remains people with more than average income segment that can afford buying elite products. In conclusion, it is important to say that Nescafe is aimed to embrace as big audience as possible. However, its primary focus is on younger people with middle and high income, who are self-confident, active and enjoy pleasure. The company positions its brand as the one giving tempting taste that you want to enjoy. Since the brand is designed to embrace wide circle of customers, the company uses differentiation while pricing the product, giving its customers the opportunity to choose from different types and sizes. The key messages that Nescafe is trying to deliver depends on the channel of communication. yet, the main messages emphasize Nescafeââ¬â¢s exceptional taste, reliability of the brand and its pecu liarity varying on the subbrand, so that everyone can find something that suits him/her best.ReferencesApplbaum K. ââ¬Å"The Marketing Eraâ⬠Routledge, New York, 2004 Brown S. ââ¬Å"Imagining Marketing: Art, aesthetics and the avant-gardeâ⬠Routledge, London, 2000 Cateora P. â⬠International Marketingâ⬠, 7th ed.
